Know About Grips

The size of the grip affects many aspects of the swing overall.  The size of the grip can affect how open or closed the face is at impact, control of the club, and how the club feels.

Grip Size

Most players never consider grip size as a game improvement technology. Grip size, however, is just as important to correct fitting as shaft length, lie angle, and so forth. Grip size not only helps with comfort, but is key to timing and control.

If the grip is too small, it may cause a player to have too much action in their wrists, allowing the club to release early. If the grip is too large, it may cause a player to have too little action in their wrists, causing the club to release late.

Either of these actions affect how well a player can time the squaring of the club face to the swing path. If the players timing is off during impact, the club face may be left open, cauing pushes, fades, or slices, or the club face may be left closed, causing pulls, draws, or hooks.

Grip Type

There are many types of grip materials and technologies that affect a player's comfort and club control. Some types of these materials include basic rubber, wrapped synthetic, or inserted cord, and so forth.

When deciding on what grip you will use, consider your own unique needs like sweaty palms, soft of rough skin, arthritic pain, calluses or scars; consider climate influences such as humid or wet conditions, cold or heat, etc.

Many manufacturers have addressed these issues with new technologies to aid and benefit the player.

Grip Technologies

Some grips include reminders to help players with consistency. These may be visual reminders etched and painted in the grip, or they may include a rib reminder that bulges at the bottom of the grip. Each of these are designed to help the player remember where to place their hands and how to hold the club.

These are just some of the many types and technologies available with grips. Our staff can help you identify which technologies will better suit your needs.
