Know About Club Size
The
size of the club head and the center-of-gravity (COG) will change the launch
angle of the ball.
Clubhead Size
The size of the clubhead for metal drivers has grown tremendously since the days
of persimmons woods. Engineers are finding better ways to increase distance and
improve accuaracy. This dramatic change can be disturbing for players who are
used to smaller, more traditional club sizes. However, players are adapting to
the new, larger heads and experienceing better driving ability on the course.
Two dimensions that are evolving are the depth of the head
(measured from the face to the back of the head) and the height
of the face (measured from the sole to the top of the head).
These dimensions have two advantages for game improvement. The larger size of
the face allows the "sweet-spot", or distance zone to be larger, making the
club more forgiving and distances more consistent.
The depth of the head allows for more stability and a lower center of gravity,
sending the ball higher with less total spin imparted on the ball. All of these
advantages combined make today's driver a lot more enjoyable to hit.
